WHERE WE TALK ABOUT POSITIVE ASPECTS

Today, I’d like to talk about positive aspects – positive aspects of our lives, positive aspects of ourselves – and how we can better focus our attention on them and use them to align more closely with who we really are.

Allowing yourself to open your mind and your heart to the positive aspects of your life is perhaps the most direct means of connecting with who you really are in any given moment. And we stress this idea of “any given moment” because indeed this type of allowing, this type of connection, is possible in any given moment, whether you are consciously aware of it or not. We would even go so far as to say that everything that you need in order to wake up, to remember who you really are and why you have come, is always right there in front of you. This is why we are so excited to enter into this conversation with you on the topic of positive aspects, for this tool is indeed your most accessible one, available to you twenty-hours a day, seven days a week, in each and every moment that you draw breath. This tool is also the most potent one available to you, for when you can stop and look and savor the love, the beauty, the sheer joyful pleasure that lies within each and every moment of your life, you bring yourself in close contact with the energy of Source in the most direct and life-affirming way. And why is this? Because the entire Universe, all that you see and touch through your physical senses and all that you feel and intuit through your psychic senses, is created by and composed of the energy of Source. Despite what your ego mind might tell you, despite the often-unstoppable stream of analytical thought that the ego generates, despite all of the challenges that come from existing within a contrasting environment that presents you with constant examples of what you are NOT, despite all of this, in the end, underlying it all, there is nothing but the living, breathing, pulsating vibration of unconditional love. That is all there is. The rest, as you humans like to say, is nothing more than smoke and mirrors.

In other words, everything that we need is right there in front of us, we only have to open our eyes and then accept that what we see around us is actually ourselves, our true selves, created from the same unconditional love that comprises the entire Universe.

And this is where the use of positive aspects comes into play, for by allowing yourself to see the good in your life, and by recognizing that good as who you really are, you foster remembrance.

I hate to sound like a broken record, because I know that I say this a lot, but looking for something like positive aspects in our day is often difficult for us because we’re just not used to doing it.

Then it is about time that you allowed yourself to become used to it, do you not agree? For in relative terms, it requires no great effort, only a firm desire to follow through on your intention. And we are only speaking about a moment here and a moment there, are we not? Sometimes it is the smallest element, the smallest moment, that holds within it the possibility of the greatest transformation.

Yes, of course, it would be great if we could easily see the positive aspects of our lives, of our relationships, of all that we experience during the course of our day. That would feel wonderful, if we could keep it up, that is.

And why should you not “keep it up,” as you say? All that it involves is practice. In a sense, all that you would be doing is “teaching” yourself something that you already know, something that is already a part of who you really are. You are already love, you are already joy, you are already peace and contentment. All that you are essentially doing in looking for the positive aspects of your day is recognizing and greeting yourself in each and every moment, and by doing so, allowing the journey towards remembrance of self, a journey that initially you undertook so eagerly, to advance and evolve. And that takes practice, much like everything that is worthwhile in life. As you humans like to say, “practice makes perfect.”

Could you tell us how we might more easily spot the positive aspects in our day, in our lives? I remember a movie I watched as a kid, a Disney film starring Haley Mills called “Pollyanna,” about a young orphan girl who comes to a small town dominated by the rigid rules set down by the richest woman in town who also happens to be her aunt and newly-adoptive guardian. During the course of the film, Pollyanna encounters a great many unhappy, dissatisfied townsfolk, but she convinces them all to play the “glad game,” a simple way of looking past the negativity in their lives to focus more on those things or people or events that make them feel glad. And it works. By the end of the film, everyone in the town is feeling much, much happier about their lives, including her cranky old aunt, all because of a little something called the “glad game.”

In this film of “Pollyanna” from your youth, it is the young girl who spreads her innocent wisdom throughout the town, the one who opens the hearts and minds of the residents to the possibility that love and joy underlie each and every moment. In other words, through her own natural exuberance, she increases the awareness of those around her to the positivity that already exists. While it is certainly possible to attract such a person into your life to point the way, to show you the positive aspects in your own life, generally each individual must take responsibility for this part of the journey themselves. That is why awareness is so important. It is the key to your remembering who you really are and why you have come, for without increasing your awareness of what you are feeling from moment to moment, it is very difficult to seek out and then focus upon those life experiences that make you feel good. And feeling good is the priority, is it not?

To be honest, I think most of the time, we humans are not even aware of when we’re feeling good or when we’re feeling bad. We know in general how we feel, but we’re often short on specifics. Yes, we notice it when the experience is a big one, if you know what I mean. Big enough to trigger a substantial emotional response that we can’t ignore. But we often let the rest of our emotional life slip on by without stopping to acknowledge it.

Start by looking for the small things, for the small moments in your life that naturally align you with Source energy, those moments that allow Source energy to flow into your field almost without your thinking about it – the beautiful new plant you were so excited to purchase, your kitten playing with your feet under the table, a little child laughing. These moments of alignment will vary according to the personality and the preferences of the individual involved, but each and every one of you has the capacity for enjoying an infinite variety of moments such as this. The more you practice looking for them and keeping your attention on them, the more evident and obvious they will become in your daily experience. And then the momentum will really begin to shift and to build, for by focusing on appreciation of the positive aspects in your life and holding your attention there, you place yourself in the receptive mode, you open the door to allowing all that is good in the Universe, you draw it to you in accordance with the Law of Attraction. By focusing on that which makes you feel good, you pull into your field, into your experience, more of that which makes you feel good. Does this not make sense?

Of course. It’s just a question doing it, remembering to do it, remembering how important it is to the work we’re all doing.

So, commit yourself. Commit yourself to your own happiness, to your own joy, to taking pleasure in the life you have created for yourself. As simple as it may sound, this is your choice – feeling good or feeling bad. Which do you wish to experience? If you want to feel good, if you intend to feel good, look for things in your life to appreciate. Look for the positive aspects of all that you experience. Make a list. Create a chart. Start a journal of positive aspects and consult it on a daily basis, adding to it any new discoveries you make along the way. Surround yourself with objects and people that make you feel good. All of these are ways to remind yourself of what is most important – feeling good means being aligned means remembering who you really are and why you have come.

And what do we do when we encounter something that does NOT feel so positive? It’s one thing to remember to look for things that maybe already have the power to make us feel good, but what happens when we have an experience that initially makes us feel bad, that triggers anger or jealousy or fear, like a break-up or the death of a loved one or a horrible accident? How do you find the positive aspects in those kinds of circumstances?

We are not suggesting that you ignore your feelings when you are confronted by a situation or an experience that makes you feel sad or frightened or confused, only that once you have given these emotions the space they need, that eventually, when you feel it is appropriate, that you make the decision to pivot – pivot your mind, pivot your heart, away from the aspect of the experience which makes you feel bad to that aspect which has the potential to make you feel good. All it takes is a moment of consideration – is there another way I could be feeling in this moment? If you can manage to answer that question in the affirmative, then you have made a good start. Quiet yourself for a moment, take a breath, detach and pull back as best you can, make an internal commitment to shift your point of view, then refocus your attention. Tell yourself “Yes, I am sad, or angry, or upset, or frightened at the moment, but I know that there is always another choice I can make without invalidating that which I already feel. It is just a question of perspective and I am capable of shifting my perspective to whenever I choose.” This is how it is done. It only takes practice and a firm commitment.
