WHERE WE BEGIN TO EXAMINE THE NATURE OF THE EGO
Are you there?
Yes, we are here.
Before we start, I want to let our readers know that, moving forward, we will be adding new posts on Mondays and Thursdays rather than on Mon-Wed-Fri. Several of our more regular readers have suggested that this material needs a few days to really sink in, so to accommodate them, we will only post two days a week instead of three for the time being.
That seems like a reasonable adjustment.
I think so, too. OK. So, I have been thinking a lot about the ego recently.
And your ego appreciates the attention, we’re sure.
The ego is a tricky thing, isn’t it?
The ego is a large subject, one that is certainly too large for any one posting of this blog. But we are happy to entertain any questions that you may have regarding the ego. It is an important subject for all human persons, since the ego is often the driving force in much of what you unconsciously choose to experience in your day-to-day lives.
Maybe we should start with a simple question: What is the ego?
Not such a simple question. Again, this is a very broad subject, and while we are happy to begin a conversation on the subject of the ego, bear in mind that this is a complicated topic, one that will require many blog entries to explore.
I understand.
One of the difficulties in discussing the ego with a human person is that the ego will resist any attempt to dissect it, to examine it, to hold it up to the light. One of its survival techniques is to perpetuate fear and it will hold strong to that intent, regardless of how much energy you use to reduce its effects in your life. Every single time you worry about something in your life – family, relationships, money, work, romantic love, etc. – the ego is at work. It thrives on keeping you off-balance and in a state of anxiety. Drama is its food. If you take the time to monitor your thoughts, especially during those times when you are feeling good, you will notice that as soon as things seem to be going well, your mind will almost immediately begin to look for problems, for something to worry about, for the other shoe to drop, all in an effort to drive out the energies of contentment and well-being. That is the ego doing its very best to keep itself alive.
This IS a complicated issue, isn’t it?
We have barely begun to touch on this subject.
So, for now, what else can you say about how the ego functions?
Another difficulty in discussing the ego is that most human persons identify themselves with their egos and that necessitates a very delicate examination of its aspects and effects.
Can you distill the essence of the ego into a few sentences so that our readers will have a sense of what you are talking about?
Let us start with the idea that the ego is an invention, a creation of the human consciousness. It is basically a collection of thought groups or belief systems that an individual human person acquires over the course of their lifetime. These belief systems are designed initially to assist you in understanding the world. But what most do not realize until they are older is that most, if not all, of these beliefs are based in fear. As you move through life, these fear-based beliefs begin to function less as a means of understanding the world and more as a means of protecting oneself against it. Thus, fear becomes the ego’s fuel as well as its prime commodity. Fear-based beliefs held in place by fear. Do you begin to see the difficulty in not only speaking about the ego, but in trying to understand how pervasive it has become in your life and in the lives of those around you?
Yes, it all does seem a bit overwhelming, the whole idea of the ego.
And that suits the ego just fine. The ego seeks nothing more than its own perpetuation. Consequently, it sees every attempt to circumvent its authority over you and your life as a threat, a threat to its very existence. If you were to reach a point in your life where you remember who you really are, then the ego would cease to exist. So, it will do everything in its power to resist any attempt to replace it with a mindset of light and love.
The ego is a very powerful force in our lives, isn’t it?
The ego’s power derives from the tendency of all human persons to identify themselves with it. How many times, for example, have you said to yourself when you have acted in a way that is less than loving, “I couldn’t help it” or “That’s just the way I am”? That is a perfect example of ego identification. Not that we seek to criticize you for this. It is where the evolution of the incarnated consciousness has brought you. But the time has come for all human persons to step up and allow themselves to identify with something much greater. To identify with the power of divine love, the power of your own true essence. That is the goal. That is your purpose in this lifetime.
Goodness! That does seem like an enormous undertaking.
Yes, indeed it is. An ENORMOUS undertaking! But trust us when we say that if you were not up to the task, if you were incapable of experiencing your own infinite capacity for love, then you would not have bothered to incarnate in physical form. You knew exactly what you were doing when you decided to manifest on the physical plane. And it is that intention, to experience yourself as love, that forms the core of all human consciousness and drives the journey that you are on. It is all just a matter of remembering.
You make it all sound so easy.
We know that it is challenging. But your true self would not have it any other way.
I realize that we are just beginning to touch on this subject, but this has been a lot of information to absorb, so I think this might be a good place to stop. I look forward to our continued discussions on the nature of the ego.
As do we. Until next time.
Thank you all.
